Doda, August 19:
A viral video of MLA Doda, Mehraj Malik, riding a bike without wearing a helmet has sparked administrative action in the district. Taking cognizance of the incident, the Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO) Doda, Abrar Ahmed Kripak (JKAS), issued a show-cause notice to the legislator.
As per the notice, details of the violation were received from social media platforms on 07 June 2025 and 18 August 2025, where MLA Mehraj Malik was reportedly seen riding vehicles bearing registration numbers JK06A-8336 and JK06C-5011 without following safety norms.
The ARTO pointed out that such violations are punishable under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 (amended in 2019), and as per the recommendations of the Hon’ble Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety, the driving licence of the violator is liable to be suspended for a minimum period of three months.
Accordingly, a notice has been served to Sh. Mehraj Din S/o Shammas Ud Din, directing him to explain within 10 days why his licence (No. JK06 20240000563) should not be suspended under Section 19(1)(D)(F) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
The ARTO has warned that in case of failure to respond, an ex-parte decision will be taken as per law. Copies of the notice have also been forwarded to the Transport Commissioner J&K, the Deputy Commissioner Doda, and the Regional Transport Officer Jammu for necessary action.
This development has stirred discussions across social and political circles, raising concerns over elected representatives setting examples in road safety compliance.
