Doda, November 2: In a landmark medical achievement, the Government Medical College (GMC) Doda has performed its first-ever successful thrombolysis procedure for an acute stroke patient, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s journey towards advanced healthcare services in the Chenab region.

According to official sources, the patient, Mr. Roshan Lal, son of Mr. Devisar from village Dolli in Tehsil Gundna, was brought to GMC Doda with symptoms of acute ischemic stroke. Acting swiftly, the medical team led by Dr. Govinder Kumar, MBBS, MD (Medicine), administered thrombolytic therapy — a procedure aimed at dissolving blood clots and restoring blood flow to the brain — within the crucial “golden hour.”

Until now, patients suffering from such neurological emergencies in Doda and surrounding areas had to be referred to tertiary care centres such as GMC Jammu or AIIMS Jammu, often losing valuable time in transit. The success of this procedure, therefore, signifies a major leap in local emergency healthcare capability.

Dr. Govinder Kumar was assisted by Dr. Divyanshu (Resident Doctor) and Dr. Momin (Intern), with essential support from nursing staff members Mr. Rajinder Singh and Mr. Arif Mir. Their coordinated efforts ensured that the complex procedure was completed efficiently and successfully.

Speaking about the achievement, Dr. Govinder Kumar stated, “This marks a proud moment for GMC Doda. With timely intervention and teamwork, we have proven that advanced stroke management can be achieved right here in Doda. This success will inspire us to strengthen emergency response further and save more lives in the future.”

The medical team expressed sincere gratitude to Principal Dr. Rakesh Behl and Head of the Department of Medicine, Dr. Amir Hussain Parray, for their consistent guidance and encouragement throughout the process.

The patient’s family members, visibly relieved and grateful, extended heartfelt thanks to the entire GMC Doda staff for their timely action and dedicated care.

With this successful case, GMC Doda joins the list of hospitals capable of performing thrombolytic therapy — a critical advancement in stroke management that can prevent permanent disability and reduce mortality when administered promptly.

This achievement not only underscores the growing medical competence at GMC Doda but also brings hope to thousands of residents in remote areas who now have access to life-saving treatment closer to home.
