Tragedy Sparks Concerns Over Safety Protocols in Power Sector

Jammu, September 06 —

A somber atmosphere prevailed in Doda district on Thursday after a Power Development Department (PDD) employee lost his life while performing duty at the Khellani Grid Station.

The deceased, identified as Pankaj Mehta, a resident of Seri Bazar, Bhaderwah, was on official duty when he came in contact with a live wire and suffered a fatal electric shock. The incident occurred on September 4, leaving him with no chance of survival.

His untimely passing has sent shockwaves across his workplace and native town. Colleagues recalled him as a sincere and hardworking official, while local residents remembered him as a humble and approachable figure, known for his readiness to help others.

Union members of the PDD have expressed deep concern over the tragedy, pressing for strict enforcement of safety measures at high-risk sites to prevent future casualties. They stressed that such incidents highlight the vulnerabilities faced by ground staff in the power sector, who often work under hazardous conditions.

Social and community activists from Bhaderwah and Doda have urged the administration to ensure adequate compensation and long-term support for the bereaved family. Many also underlined that beyond financial relief, accountability and workplace safety reforms are crucial to safeguard the lives of employees working in the field.

The incident has once again brought into sharp focus the occupational dangers linked to electricity maintenance and the urgent need for improved safety infrastructure across Jammu and Kashmir’s power network.
